What is a car insurance premium?

A car insurance premium is the monthly amount you pay for your auto insurance. This is also sometimes called your auto insurance rate.

Each auto insurance policy starts with basic coverage, and you may add optional coverage. Suppose you live in a state that requires minimum auto insurance coverage. In that case, the laws usually require that you must have basic auto insurance coverage to drive legally in that state. This insurance is for causing an accident that results in personal injury to others or property damage.

What are State Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements?

All states in America have basic minimums of liability insurance: bodily injury per person, bodily injury in total for the accident, and property damage in total for the accident. you 25/50/25. That means the minimum insurance requirements in this example are $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 for bodily injury (in total for the accident), and $25,000 for property damage (in total) for the accident.

If the damage exceeds these amounts, you must sue the driver(s) who caused the accident to try to recover the excess. Please note that the basic auto insurance coverage does not cover you as the driver, your passengers (if you caused the accident), or the cost to repair your vehicle.

The liability portion of the auto insurance policy may have a different deductible than the other parts of additional coverage.

Additional Optional Coverage Added to Liability Insurance

Collision Insurance

This Insurance pays for the damage caused when you hit another vehicle or something else, like a tree.

Comprehensive Insurance

This insurance pays for the damage or loss caused by theft, cracked windshields, vandals, hail, trees or other falling debris, and animals, such as hitting a deer while driving. MedPay Insurance

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Insurance

driver(s) caused the accident, the driver(s) has no insurance, or the limits are too small to cover all the damage.

Personal Injury Protection

Personal injury protection insurance (PIP) covers expenses for your injuries regardless of who is at fault.

Umbrella Insurance

This insurance is not about protection from rain. Instead, it covers liability greater than your auto policy’s liability limit.

Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance programs pay for a tow truck or someone to help you if you get a flat tire, are locked out of your car, run out of gas, or need a battery jumpstart.

Rental Car Reimbursement

This optional extension of coverage pays for a rental car if your car is in the repair shop due to a covered accident.

Rental Car Insurance

This insurance cover a car that you rent. Sometimes rental car companies call this insurance Collision Damage Waiver (CDW).” It is meant to cover the cost of the rental car if it is damaged.

Ride-Sharing Insurance

This insurance is useful for those earning money through ride-sharing programs. This insurance helps cover any gaps in coverage between the insurance provided by the ride-sharing company and your personal auto policy.

What changes my car insurance premium?

Many factors impact the rate that you pay for your car insurance. These factors include where you live, how the car is parked, your driving record, your age, how many miles you drive daily, and your vehicle’s year/make/model.

Your rate will be higher if your car has any known safety issues. Your rate may be lower if your vehicle has safety equipment installed, such as airbags or an anti-collision system. The cost to repair a vehicle you drive is also a consideration. Owning a fancy sports car or driving a luxury vehicle costs more for insurance because the repairs are expensive.

If you choose a higher deductible, your car insurance premium will be lower, but you will also have to pay more out-of-pocket if you get into an accident.

What is usually not insured under personal auto insurance?

Things that are NOT usually covered by personal auto insurance are the costs of general maintenance and repairs. Suppose a tire blowout happens because it is worn out. Auto insurance does not cover the cost of a new tire. However, if the tire blowout causes an accident, the insurance will cover the damages from the accident, which may include paying for a new tire.

Personal items lost or stolen from a vehicle are not usually covered. Injuries to pets in a car that get into an accident are not usually covered. Ridesharing is not covered under a standard personal auto insurance policy, but there is optional insurance to consider if you are a ride-sharing driver.

How to Compare Car
Insurance Quotes

Have the Necessary Information on Hand

Make sure to gather your personal information before you apply for a quote! You will need:

Understand What Type of Coverage You Need

The exact type of minimal insurance coverage will be determined by your state of residence. Typically, most states require vehicle owners to have liability coverage. In some states, you may be required to have PIP (commonly known as personal injury protection coverage), medical payments coverage, or underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage. But there are a few different levels of coverage you can choose from, depending on your needs and budget.

Liability Coverage

Automobile liability insurance, also known as car liability insurance or car insurance, is a type of liability insurance that is required by law in most states for all car owners. It provides coverage for damage or injuries you may cause to another person or their property while operating a vehicle. It is important to note that liability insurance only covers damages or injuries that you are responsible for. It does not cover your own injuries or damages to your own vehicle. For that, you may need to add additional coverage like Collision or Comprehensive coverage.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage is a type of car insurance that can help pay for damages to your vehicle in the event of an accident. This can include damage caused by collisions with other cars, as well as damage resulting from single-car accidents such as hitting a tree or a pole.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage is a type of car insurance that provides protection for damages to your vehicle that are not caused by a collision. This can include a wide range of events such as theft, vandalism, natural disasters, falling objects, or even animal damage. It is also known as “other than collision” coverage. Like collision coverage, comprehensive coverage is typically sold as an optional coverage. It is separate from liability insurance which only covers damages or injuries you may cause to another driver or their property in an accident.
